Deepak Balasubramanian, Ph.D.

I am a Senior Scientist in the Moreno Lab, where I investigate the molecular evolution of bacterial pathogenesis. My research focuses on the transition from commensal to pathogenic lifestyles, specifically examining how small RNAs act as master regulators of transmission and host colonization. By looking beyond classical virulence genes, I aim to uncover the subtle regulatory shifts that drive disease emergence.

I earned my Ph.D. at Florida International University with Dr. Kalai Mathee, focusing on the gene regulatory networks of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I further expanded my expertise in microbial pathogenesis and RNA biology through postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Vanderbilt University.
